Open Scholarships

Humanitarian Assistance Scholarships are designed to support students who are committed to improving humanitarian response and health for refugees, displaced persons, and populations affected by conflict and natural disasters. The Humanitarian Assistance Scholarships provide travel and research support to promising MPH, MHS and doctoral candidates enrolled full time at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

MHS and PhD/DrPH award (~$1500-2000)

The purpose of the award is to support MHS internships and doctoral student research that is related to the Center's mission. The student initiated application process parallels other scholarship applications in the International Health Department. Application components include a cover letter, concept paper, letter of faculty support, current curriculum vitae, and an optional letter of support from the host organization. For detailed information, see the Department of International Health scholarship application requirements

Applications are due on the same date as other Department of International Health scholarship applications (beginning of March each year) and should be submitted to Cristina Salazar. Applications would be reviewed and scored by a CHH panel. Awards will be announced at the year-end award school wide honors and awards ceremony and funds will be available for summer travel.

Eligible students are enrolled full time in MHS or PhD programs in any JHSPH department and have a demonstrated interest in humanitarian assistance, displacement, conflict, natural disasters, and/or preparedness. A demonstrated interest can include prior work experience in one of these fields completion of the Certificate in Humanitarian Assistance, or related coursework, including courses offered under the Humanitarian Assistance and Public Health Preparedness Certificate Programs. Students are eligible to apply during or after the first year of the academic program.

The MPH Award (~$750-1000)

This award supports MPH winter intersession travel for activities related to the CRDR mission. The application process parallels that of the MPH Field Experience Fund Award, with the same content and application. For detailed information, see the Department of International Health scholarship application requirements

To apply for the MPH Award, submit a copy of the MPH Field Experience Fund application and a cover letter to Center for Humanitarian Health Team. The cover letter should describe how the proposed travel is related to the Center's mission. Applications would be reviewed and scored by a center panel; the highest scoring proposal not funded through the MPH Field Experience Fund will receive the MPH Award. Awards will be announced in early December and funds will be available to support January travel.

Eligible students are enrolled in the full time MPH program that are either in The Health in Crisis MPH Concentration or those with prior work experience in humanitarian assistance, displacement, conflict, natural disasters, and/or preparedness.

The Goodermote Award (~$5000)

This award is given to an exceptional continuing MHS, PhD, or DrPH student with a demonstrated commitment to humanitarian assistance, displacement, conflict, natural disasters, and/or preparedness. The award is initiated by Center for Humanitarian Health and entails a review of continuing MHS, PhD, and DrPH students that are

Advised by center faculty
Planning or doing internships or dissertation research under the guidance of center faculty,
Other students known to center faculty with a demonstrated interest that is related to the center mission.

The award recipient will be announced at the year-end school wide honors and awards ceremony and will also be honored at a center special event when they receive the award; after receiving the award, recipients will make a brief presentation to center on the research and/or activities the award was used to support.
